From grey hair-inducing stress levels to greasy-prone hair being immune to conditioner, there are plenty of haircare myths out there.
Whether you heard it from your mum or a celeb or influencer online, it can be tough when you grow up and think, “Wait…is that even true?”.
Luckily for you, we’re here to dive into the facts and fiction of the haircare world so you don’t have to!
Read on to uncover the haircare myths we’re all wondering about…
Myth # 1: Dandruff Is Caused By a Dry Scalp
Our first popular haircare myth is that dandruff is caused by a dry scalp, and it’s understandable how this one came about.
While dandruff can look like dry flakes coming off the scalp, that doesn’t mean the root cause is dryness.
In fact, dandruff is caused by a fungus called Malassezia which we all have just casually living on our heads!
This fungus feasts on the sebum that our hair follicles naturally produce, and in doing this, breaks it down into its components, one of which is called Oleic Acid.
Around 50% of the population has a sensitivity to this acid, causing the body to try to defend itself by speeding up the cell renewal process and shedding skin cells, causing flakes, or dandruff.
So really, dandruff is just our body’s way of saying “hey, I don’t really like this fungus as a roommate”, not that big a deal, right?!
There are lots of ways you can treat dandruff, including using fewer hair products that contain lots of oils, using dry shampoo in between washes, and in some cases, medicated shampoo.
But if you’re not in need of the medicated shampoo just yet, we’ve got the perfect products.
Our Sensitive Scalp Shampoo and Conditioner are expertly curated to treat itchy, irritated, dandruff-prone scalps.
They work to moisturise, protect, and repair hair while removing dry and oily dandruff from the scalp and hair.
Myth # 2: Stress Causes Grey Hair
Okay, okay, maybe this one comes from childhood. You know, when your mum would tell you and your siblings you were giving her grey hairs? No? Just us then…
Thankfully for us, this myth isn’t quite true. Greying hair is a process caused by a collection of things, the biggest being genetics and ageing.
As we age, we produce less melanin which are the molecules responsible for our skin and hair colour. Without these molecules, new hair comes in grey.
With that being said, stress can speed up the ageing process a little bit, and a combination of this and less melanin production can lead to grey hair and hair falling out.
So, while it COULD speed the process up, there isn't a direct correlation between grey hair and stress, so don’t stress about it too much!
Myth # 3: Greasy-Prone Hair Should Avoid Conditioner
There is a common misconception that using conditioner or failing to properly wash conditioner out of your hair causes greasy hair.
We’re here to defend conditioner and tell you that’s not true.
Greasy hair is not caused by conditioner but by the sebum produced by our hair follicles.
When too much of this sebum is produced, it can cause a buildup, which is what leads to hair looking and feeling greasy.
Without using conditioner, even greasy-prone hair wouldn’t get the hydration and nourishment it needs, so instead of avoiding it altogether, why not find a conditioner that’s perfect for you?
Curated for thin and greasy-prone hair, our Mango & Passionfruit Shampoo and Conditioner is the perfect duo for these kinds of hair.
With their lightweight formula, they’re gentle on the hair, meaning they’re easier to wash out and have less chance of leaving residue.
They’re also formulated with nutrients such as Provitamins B5 which helps increase the elasticity in hair strands as absorb water for more moisture.
Myth # 4: Brushing Wet Hair Leads To Breakages
A fact we do know is that no one wants hair breakage. It’s not fun and can sometimes be very painful, which leads people to believe that they shouldn’t brush wet hair.
The truth is, this completely depends on the type of brush you use. If you’re using a brush that is ideal for brushing through dense, thick hair, this could lead to friction and breakages.
Whereas, if you’re using a wide-toothed comb, you can rest assured your hair is protected.
For example, our Wide Tooth Comb effectively detangles hair without causing friction between strands and leading to breakages.
Myth # 5: Heat Is Damaging To Hair
Our last myth is all about heat, and we’re burning to dispel it for you.
Whilst we shouldn’t be applying heat to our hair all the time, there are ways to protect our hair, so that we can use styling tools like straighteners, curlers, and hair dryers.
Incorporating heat protectant sprays into your hair care routine can help to minimise the damage and keep your hair healthy, along with using lower settings on styling tools.
Another pro tip is to maintain a distance of at least six inches between a hair dryer and your hair, and keep it moving - avoid leaving one section of your hair subject to heat for an extended time.
With our Mango & Passionfruit Heat Protectant, you can go about your normal hair care routine with peace of mind knowing your hair is protected from temperatures of up to 230 degrees.
This product also adds moisture and nourishes the hair, with a blend of Mango Seed Oil and Castor Oil.
So there you have it, haircare myths debunked!
We hope this blog has helped you uncover some truths about haircare, as well as dispel some myths that you may have believed for a while.
