You know that feeling when there’s something just not right about your hair? Like you’ve spent all this time styling it and now it’s…standing up?
Enter: static hair. Not the vibe we’re going for.
Static hair can be annoying, to say the least, but it could also be a sign that you’re not taking care of your hair as well as you could be.
Today we’re taking a look at what causes static hair and how to deal with it!
What Causes Static Hair?
First of all, there are a few ways you can spot static hair, including:
Static hair is caused when hair gains an electric charge from taking on extra electrons (that’s your little bit of science for today!), and this can happen due to friction or a change in humidity.
This friction can be between your hair and other objects, including hairbrushes, coats, and scarves.
Some other things that could cause static hair are:
Weather: Cold weather makes static hair a lot worse thanks to dry conditions, which is why static hair is typically worse during winter.
Mixing temperatures: Going from cold temperatures outside to warm temperatures inside can also cause static hair, as you’re exposing your hair to different humidities in a short amount of time.
Isn’t static hair just frizzy hair?
Static and frizzy hair are both categorised as unmanageable, unruly hair, but with that being said, they are different things.
Frizzy hair is a result of dry, damaged hair soaking up the humidity in the air, causing the hair to bend and curl.
Static hair is a result of dry, damaged hair meeting a low-humidity environment.
Usually, frizzy hair tends to happen in the summer, while static hair tends to happen in the winter.
How To Deal With Static Hair
Dealing with static hair doesn’t have to be the end of the world, and there are a few different ways to get rid of it.
Use a humidifier: Doing this helps to add moisture into the air, reducing the amount of static hairs you’ll experience.
Use Silk/Satin Pillowcases: Using materials like these helps to protect your hair cuticle as you sleep, meaning less friction and less static.
Our luxurious Satin Pillowcase helps tame frizz, reduce hair breakage, and retain moisture in the hair, helping you have less static hair to deal with!
Use Sulphate and Silicone-Free Products: Products that contain sulphates and silicones can dry your hair out, causing it to become static more easily.
Among other products (which we’ll mention later) some of our sulphate and silicone-free products include our Sensitive Scalp Shampoo & Conditioner and Clarifying Scalp Scrub.
Shower Routine Shake-Up: Your hair wash routine could be causing static hair, so it could be time for a shake-up.
Washing your hair every day can cause it to become dry, leading to it becoming static easier.
If you’re washing your hair every day, consider cutting this down and washing with lukewarm water instead of hot water.
